Volkswagen raised its stake in the German truck maker to 29.9 percent in a move that VW said Tuesday could help foster a merger between MAN and Scania of Sweden.

Workers at Volkswagen AG's Belgian plant on Tuesday approved a restructuring plan to work longer hours without extra pay as a necessary move to keep the slimmed-down factory open and guarantee employment.

Volkswagen of America is recalling 790,000 vehicles because of problems with a brake light switch. The automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that if improperly installed, the brake light switches in the vehicles could malfunction.

Volkswagen AG said Tuesday it has increased its stake in German truckmaker MAN AG to nearly 30 percent, a move that would give it a better say in guiding the company toward a friendly alliance with Swedish truckmaker Scania AB.

Volkswagen is said to be working on a new small and cheap model for emerging markets like India, Russia and China. The new compact model is expected to cost anywhere between 5,000 to 6,000 Euros.

Volkswagen is recalling 790,000 vehicles because of problems with the brake light switch. The recall affects 1999-2006 model years of the golf and GTI, 2001-2005 Jettas, 2001-2007new beetles and the 2004 R32.
